What to Wear Snorkeling in Oahu for Beginners

Ensuring you and your friends or family have a safe and fun experience is of utmost importance. Check out our Oahu snorkeling guide to learn more about safety, what to expect, and what to bring.

  • We suggest wearing a lifejacket or snorkeling vest. Not only do they make snorkeling easier so that you can float on the surface, but they also make you more visible to lifeguards and boaters.
  • While reef shoes are common, we suggest that you skip the reef shoes. Coral reefs are fragile eco systems and you should not touch, and definitely not stand of them. We suggest wearing your sandals to the waters edge (we call them slippers in Hawaii), putting on your fins and making sure you do not kick, stand on or touch the fragile coral reef.
  • A standard mask and snorkel are the best equipment. While full-face masks and fancy snorkels with valves and devices to keep water out might seem tempting, all of those extra parts add restrictions to air flow. While it might take a little practice keeping your snorkel out of the water, if you give it some time, maybe practice in the hotel pool first, we think you’ll have the best experience with an “old school” mask and snorkel.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Oahu for Beginners

  • Hanauma Bay – Hanauma bay offers shallow protected water in a nature preserve. There is gear for rent right on the beach and lifeguards.
  • Sharks Cove – this spot is only accessible in the summer when winter swells subside. The volcanic formations create amazing underwater topography. This can be a great spot for the more experienced snorkelers and free divers farther out while the shallows are great for beginners.
  •  Kuilima Cove – located right at turtle bay this a great spot for beginners. Its a great place to hang on the beach and you can head over to Turtle Bay resort for some amazing food and drink s when you’re done snorkeling. Public parking is available
  • Electric Beach (Kahe Point) – This spot offers very clear water. It is named because of a water pipe that pushes out warm water used to cool the eclectic plant across the street from the beach. This spot is best snorkeled in the summer due to high surf in the winter.
  • Waimea Bay (During Summer) – This iconic home to big wave surfing in the winter becomes a flat bay in the summer. Snorkeling and hanging out at this beautiful sandy beach is a must do. Arrive early as parking is very limited.

Essential Snorkeling Tips for Beginners

Snorkeling is an exciting experience for all ages and skill levels. Knowing what to expect and planning ahead for your adventure can make for an even better experience.

  • Gear BasicsEnsure your mask creates a good seal around your face to prevent leaks; simple J-shaped snorkels are often best for beginners; fins should fit comfortably and not be too long to avoid cramping; rash guards protect your skin from sun and potential irritants.
  • How to Breathe ComfortablyBefore venturing into deeper areas, get comfortable breathing through your snorkel in shallow water where you can stand; focus on slow, deep breaths and try to relax.
  • Staying Safe in the OceanBe aware of ocean currents and avoid areas with strong flows; always snorkel with a buddy for safety; do not touch or disturb marine life and maintain a safe distance.
  • Best Time to Go SnorkelingMornings often have calmer waters and better visibility before winds pick up in the afternoon; check local weather and tide reports before heading out.
  • What to BringUse reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine ecosystems; bring a towel for drying off; stay hydrated with plenty of water; pack snacks for energy; and use a dry bag to keep your valuables safe from water.
  • Foggy maskPrevent fogging by using a defogging solution or saliva before entering the water; if your mask fogs up underwater, slightly lift the bottom of the mask to let in some water, then tilt your head back to clear it.
  • Touching Coral or Marine LifeTouching coral can damage the delicate living organisms, and disturbing marine life can stress animals; be a responsible snorkeler by observing from a respectful distance and avoiding any physical contact.
